...VICTORIA'S sickest babies will be saved by donations of human milk from other
mothers thanks to the state's first milk bank
The bank is expected to begin operating at the Mercy Hospital in Heidelberg from
early next year.
The scheme, which will accept donor human milk from mothers, is expected to
help hundreds of the state's most desperately ill, premature babies.
The bank involves donors who are mothers with excess milk who have also given
birth to premature babies.
The mothers - who have been carefully screened - will express and freeze milk
daily and then deliver it to the hospital once a week.
The milk will then be pasteurised and tested, before being given to babies
born from about 24 weeks whose own mothers have inadequate supply......
